Wedding Cake Cost: Per Slice, Per Tier and the Sheet-Cake Trick

Wedding cakes are priced by the slice, which makes them the one wedding vendor you can estimate on a napkin: guests times dollars. The dollars run $4-12 per slice in 2026, and the whole game is in what pushes you from the bottom of that range to the top — and in the oldest trick in the bakery, which is to make the cake in the photos smaller than the cake in the kitchen.

Per slice: the ranges

Cake stylePer slice (2026)100 guests
Buttercream, simple, 2-3 tiers$4 - 7$400 - 700
Buttercream with fresh flowers or textured finish$6 - 9$600 - 900
Fondant, 3-4 tiers, sugar flowers or hand painting$9 - 12$900 - 1,200
Sculpted, metallic, high-end designer$12 - 20+$1,200 - 2,000+

Most couples land at $500-1,200 for 100 guests. Delivery and setup add $50-150; big-metro premium 30-50%. Supermarket and warehouse-club wedding cakes exist at $2-3 per slice and are exactly what they sound like.

What moves the price

  • Tiers: more tiers means more structure (dowels, boards) and more decorating surface. A 3-tier cake serves 75-100; each added tier adds labor faster than servings.
  • Fondant vs buttercream: fondant is $1-3 more per slice — it's slower, and most people prefer the taste of buttercream anyway.
  • Sugar flowers: $5-25 each, hand-made. Fresh flowers from your florist cost a fraction and the baker will place them.
  • Flavors and fillings: one flavor per tier is standard; premium fillings (fresh fruit, caramel, liqueur) add $0.50-1.50 per slice.
  • Tasting: $25-75 for two, credited toward the order at most shops.
  • Delivery: $50-150, more if the venue is far or the cake is tall; someone qualified has to assemble it on site.

The sheet-cake trick

The single biggest saving in the wedding-cake business: order a small display cake — two tiers, serving 30-40 — for the photos and the cutting, and have the bakery deliver sheet cakes in the same flavor to the kitchen for the other 60-70 guests. Sheet cake runs $1.50-3 per serving versus $6-10 for the tiered version, so a 100-guest cake goes from $800 to about $400-450. Every reputable bakery does this; ask for "a cutting cake plus kitchen sheets." Guests get the same cake on the same plates and nobody has ever noticed.

The venue's cut

The venue or caterer charges a cake-cutting fee of $1-3 per slice to plate an outside cake — $100-300 for 100 guests, on top of the bakery's price. Negotiate it out at signing (it's the most-waived fee in the industry) or fold it into the catering contract; the complete list of these fees is in Venue Hidden Costs. Also check whether the caterer's per-person price already includes a dessert — see Wedding Catering Cost — because paying for dessert twice is the most common overspend on this line.

Timeline and paperwork

Book 3-6 months out (6-9 for a well-known baker in peak season). Deposit of 50%, non-refundable, with the balance due 2-4 weeks before. Design changes after the deposit may be billed; flavor changes usually aren't. Guest count locks about two weeks out, same as the caterer. Ask about the top tier: the "save it for the anniversary" tradition means some bakers include a free small tier or a fresh anniversary cake a year later.

If the cake isn't the point, a dessert table costs about the same, dodges the cutting fee and pleases the people who don't eat cake. For everything else the shop sells, see the dessert shop guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a wedding cake cost for 100 guests?

$500-1,200 in 2026, at $4-12 per slice depending on tiers, fondant vs buttercream and decoration. Delivery adds $50-150 and the venue's cutting fee another $100-300 unless you negotiate it away.

What is the sheet-cake trick?

Order a small tiered cake for the photos and the cutting, and have the bakery supply plain sheet cakes in the same flavor to the kitchen for the rest of the guests. Sheet cake costs $1.50-3 per serving versus $6-10 tiered, cutting the bill roughly in half.

Is fondant more expensive than buttercream?

Yes, by about $1-3 per slice, because it takes longer to apply. Most guests prefer the taste of buttercream; fondant wins on sharp edges and heat tolerance for outdoor summer weddings.

Do I have to pay a cake-cutting fee?

Only if it's in your venue or catering contract — and it often is, at $1-3 per slice. It's routinely waived when asked at signing, and never waived when asked on the day.
